Kim Kelley-Wagner has two daughters who were adopted from China. In everyday life, they have been subjected to horrid statements from people - to their faces, to their mother as they stood by her, etc. In this photo collection, shared on her blog, Kim and her daughters (Lily and Meika) put these ignorant cruelties front and center. [x]
"I have tried to explain to my daughters that people do not say these things to be mean, they say them out of ignorance, which is why I am sharing some of them. Words are powerful, they can become tools or weapons, choose to use them wisely."
that is so fucking cruel
i hope these girls find an adoptee network where they can talk about these things with other adoptees. i’m kind of uncomfortable with their mom posting their pics on the internet though. i mean, making them write down really triggering, cruel, racist things said to them so she can take pictures and post them online? that would be a really emotionally taxing thing to do, confronting shit like that.
it’s really worrying :(
And, “people only say stuff out ignorance, not malice?” These kids are going to be learning the hard way that’s not true, either.
Ignorance, you simply explain and the other person goes, “Oh, I didn’t know, I’m sorry!” but hurtful, hate, malice? That doubles down on it. Because the point of saying this shit is to remind them to know what their place is, and to stay in it - and trying to explain differently will bring some really ugly backlash and threats.
Because nothing says “I don’t know better” than the defensiveness that comes around “I’m white and how dare you contradict me”….
